Students and mentors from the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair were featured on an episode of "Canada's Greatest Know-It-All", which aired on Discovery Canada on Monday, January 28th at 10pm.

Watch the segment online at Discovery Channel Canada.

70 students from the Hamilton/Halton area who competed in BASEF 2012 took part in this episode, as the challenge for the Know-It-Alls was competing in two teams to design and develop their own science fair project.  Members of BASEF's organizing committee assist as "expert judges", and the students play a major role in determining the winning project.

Wondering were to begin? Have an idea and are not sure where to go with it? Check out these resources:

  • The Science Success! student guide and workbook have been designed by BASEF organizers to help you learn about the scientific process while producing a well-designed project.
  • Have a look at our Project Resources page for links to sites which will get you thinking, get you started, give you information about research methods, and provide hints and tips on projects and project presentation.

What's next?

Depending upon the type of project you are doing and your grade level, there may be some special rules and restrictions on the project you are planning. If your project involves people, animals, or hazardous materials, you may need to get permission or review before you start work.  Who inspires and encourages your kids?

There are some amazing teachers in our community who are helping prepare students for this year’s Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF).

The BASEF Champion Teacher Recognition Awards recognizes and honours teachers who go ‘above and beyond’ to teach students how to do project-based science and mentor them as they prepare their projects for BASEF.

One teacher has been selected to receive the Champion Teacher Recognition Award for 2014:

Ingrid Munson, Maple Grove Public School, Oakville ON

The Champion Teacher Recognition Award for 2014 includes induction into the BASEF Champion Teacher Hall of Fame, a plaque, and $350 to be used in the classroom of the winning teacher. $250 of this year's award is funded as part of the Awards for Excellence in Science & Technology.  A panel of BASEF Organizing Committee members selects the Champion Teacher Recognition Award winners from among those nominated online by their peers, parents and students.

Here are some of the comments made by some of Ingrid's students and peers:

“…Ingrid’s enthusiasm for Science Fair has been contagious. … Every school she has been at has participated in Science Fair.  Even when she moves to a new school … students continue to attend from those schools.”

“…has been one of the biggest advocates for the fair in Halton Board”

“…I would not be where I am today [Stanford University], blessed with the opportunities at my avail if Ms. Munson had not opened my horizons many years ago. I am tremendously grateful for the impact that she has had on my life and interest in science, technology, and innovation.”

“…resourcefulness and genuine excitement for science education”

“… continues to foster a growing generation of students invested in science research”

“…incredibly enthusiastic and encouraging of exploratory learning”
